Quick and straightforward installation. Easy setup, controlled through the phone app. If you're looking to save money, the white thermostat performs just as well.

The best aspect is that we purchased temperature sensors, allowing us to heat our house from remote points. Our thermostat, located in a small hallway with two vents, used to make the hallway warmer than the rest of the house. With the new setup, the furnace runs longer with fewer starts.

There's room for improvement in upgrading the monthly reports, but this one have definitely convinced us.

Our review

This is a fantastic addition to my smart home. Setting up the hardware was a breeze. Although my old thermostat didn't have a C wire, I found an extra wire in the bundle. I connected it to the C wire slot on my furnace and linked it to the Ecobee, avoiding the need for the adapter.

The aesthetics are impressive—it's like a small piece of art on my wall. The large, readable numbers display the current temperature, and as you walk by, the screen changes to show the set temperature, just like in the product image.

Setting up the software was also straightforward, thanks to the provided guide. While the built-in schedule is a bit limited, I don't use it anyway. I paired it with HomeKit for voice commands like "Hey Siri, what's the temperature?" and "Turn up the heat." Additionally, I connected it to my SmartThings hub, which now has native support. This allows me to set rules like lowering the temperature when everyone leaves the house or raising it when someone arrives.

An added bonus: my state's energy trust offers a $50 rebate for the purchase of a smart thermostat. Don't forget to check for local/state incentives.

Our review

The in-app installation instructions set the gold standard for electrical smart devices I've worked with. Living in a 90s-built home, opening a switch box can be an adventure. I've returned numerous smart switches, and even with the ones I've kept, I struggled with the wiring.

This was brilliantly developed by the creators. The app guides you through installation, asking about your model, the number of wires in your box, and even the wire colors. It's a dream for someone with a relatively low level of understanding of electrical wiring.

Mysa Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard and in-Wall Heaters V2 - best smart thermostat - grandgoldman.com

The thermostat is stunning compared to the old tan rotary ones I replaced.

The app is also well-designed with numerous features. Setting up zones and schedules is intuitive. You have complete control over unit brightness, sleep mode, wake brightness, etc., often overlooked in smart devices that can leave houses resembling something out of Tron. The app tracks electricity usage and allows you to enter a kWh price to calculate your heater's cost up to the minute. The humidity sensors are handy in my basement during the summer to monitor my dehumidifier.

I'm so impressed with these. I rarely talk much after a purchase, but I can't say enough good things about these Mysa thermostats. They're so good that I'm definitely looking into other Mysa products. If you have baseboard heaters, don't think twice—get these.

Our review

Honeywell Home RTH9585WF Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostat - best smart thermostat - grandgoldman.com

Recently installed on my propane forced-air furnace, the instructions for this thermostat are clear and thorough. Wall installation requires a bit of finesse but isn't overly difficult. A notable advantage is that I could use the same mounting screws that held my 12-year-old Honeywell thermostat, thanks to Honeywell maintaining the same spacing. You'll need to locate and use the "C" wire on your heating unit; if unavailable, there's a workaround, though it sacrifices some fan functionality.

The Wi-Fi setup takes a while and involves creating an account, which is standard. There are numerous settings and preferences to configure. Once completed, the thermostat functions well both manually and through Wi-Fi. My only complaint is that the screen has faint diagonal lines, but considering it's a thermostat and not a 72" flatscreen, this is a minor issue.

Note: Most modern heating systems have a permissive switch in the door frame where the wiring is, and they won't work with the door off. Don't ask how I know or how long it took me to find it!

I was looking for a smart thermostat without breaking the bank and without the need for any fancy features like self learning based on your habits for example. Got a good deal on the Sensi and decided to try it out. I downloaded the app before purchasing and was able to check my existing wiring to see if the Sensi was compatible for my system.

The app is simple and goes through all the necessary steps for setting up. You will need the C wire for this thermostat. Easy to use, great features, and very responsive when using your phone.

Nowadays, many products claim to offer "easy setup" or a "quick install," but often the instructions leave you confused after just a few steps.

The instructions even include helpful tips for those unfamiliar with electrical wiring. I highly recommend it for anyone considering a DIY installation. With a drill, screwdrivers, pencil, and level, it's a breeze. Kudos to the person who wrote the instructions – the thermostat works great.

  • Technology dependence: Smart thermostats rely on Wi-Fi connectivity and software updates, so they may be more susceptible to malfunctions or security concerns.
  • Limited compatibility: Some smart thermostats may not be compatible with all HVAC systems, so it's important to check compatibility before purchasing.

Overall, the downsides of smart thermostats are outweighed by the potential benefits for many homeowners. If you're comfortable with technology and are looking for ways to improve your home comfort and reduce energy consumption, a smart thermostat can be a valuable addition to your home.

What exactly does a smart thermostat do?

A smart thermostat is a type of programmable thermostat that connects to your Wi-Fi network and allows you to control your HVAC system remotely from your smartphone or tablet. It can also learn your usage patterns and adjust temperatures accordingly to optimize energy consumption.

Can a smart thermostat replace any thermostat?

Most smart thermostats can replace traditional thermostats, but it's important to check compatibility with your specific HVAC system. Some smart thermostats may require a C-wire, which is a common wire that provides constant power to the thermostat. If your HVAC system does not have a C-wire, you may need to use a battery-powered smart thermostat or have an electrician install a C-wire.

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?

The ease of installation for a smart thermostat depends on your HVAC system and the specific model you choose. Some smart thermostats are relatively easy to install, while others may require professional installation. If you're not comfortable with DIY projects, it's best to hire a qualified HVAC technician to install your smart thermostat.

Why are smart thermostats so expensive?

Smart thermostats typically cost more than traditional thermostats due to the advanced technology they incorporate. Smart thermostats use Wi-Fi connectivity, sensors, and advanced algorithms to optimize energy consumption, learn user preferences, and provide remote control capabilities. These features come at a cost, contributing to the higher price of smart thermostats.

Do smart thermostats use more electricity?

Smart thermostats themselves use a small amount of electricity, and some models even have an energy-saving mode that reduces their power consumption. However, smart thermostats can help you save money on energy bills by optimizing your HVAC system and preventing unnecessary heating or cooling.

Do smart thermostats lower electric bill?

Smart thermostats have the potential to lower your electric bill by learning your usage patterns and adjusting temperatures accordingly. They can also prevent unnecessary heating or cooling by detecting when you're home or away. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Energy, smart thermostats can save homeowners an average of 10% on their energy bills.

What are the concerns about smart thermostats?

Some homeowners may have concerns about the security and privacy of smart thermostats, as they collect and transmit data about your home's temperature and usage patterns. However, many smart thermostats use encryption and other security measures to protect your data. It's important to choose a reputable brand and read reviews before making your decision.
