Domestic violence comments made by Australian Senator Pauline Hanson have ignited widespread condemnation, with experts calling them dangerous and misleading. Hanson suggested domestic abuse is a “two-way street” and questioned why women do not simply leave abusive relationships. These remarks are not a slip of the tongue but part of a long-standing narrative she has promoted for over a decade.
The Context of Hanson’s Comments
Hanson’s latest outburst comes as her One Nation party gains traction by adopting anti-immigrant and hard-right policies similar to those in the United States and the United Kingdom. Her political resurgence has been fueled by alliances with anti-feminist groups and personal history involving domestic violence allegations against her son.

A History of Controversial Statements
Since returning to parliament in 2016, Hanson has repeatedly questioned the credibility of domestic violence victims. In 2017, she claimed women “throw around” domestic violence orders. In 2021, she cited a disputed figure of “21 men” dying by suicide due to false accusations. These claims have been repeatedly debunked by experts.
- 2017: Hanson says women abuse domestic violence protection orders.
- 2019: She uses parliamentary privilege to attack her former daughter-in-law.
- 2021: Hanson repeats the unsubstantiated “21 men” statistic on Sky News.
- 2023: Her “two-way street” comment draws widespread backlash.
Expert Reactions and Data
Domestic violence experts have uniformly rejected Hanson’s claims. The Australian Institute of Criminology reports that false allegations of domestic violence are extremely rare, with fewer than 5% of cases found to be deliberately fabricated. Below is a comparison of Hanson’s assertions versus evidence-based data.
| Claim by Hanson | Expert Response |
|---|---|
| Domestic violence is a “two-way street” | Overwhelming evidence shows men are the primary perpetrators in intimate partner violence, and women are the vast majority of victims (ABS, 2021). |
| Women routinely make false allegations for family law advantage | Studies show false reports account for 2–5% of cases; the family law system already penalizes false claims. |
| 21 men die by suicide each week due to false accusations | No credible source supports this figure; suicide among men is a serious issue but not linked to false DV claims. |
