NSW Police Apologize for Neo-Nazi Protest Notification Failure 2026

The NSW police apology over a neo-Nazi protest notification failure has sparked renewed scrutiny of community safety protocols. Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna expressed regret before the royal commission into antisemitism and social cohesion, admitting that human error led to Jewish groups not being warned about a White Australia party rally outside parliament in November 2025.

What Happened During the Neo-Nazi Protest?

Members of the White Australia party displayed a banner reading “Abolish the Jewish Lobby” and chanted Hitler Youth slogans. NSW police had been informed of the planned protest more than a week in advance, but failed to activate the procedure to notify senior Jewish leaders.

McKenna acknowledged that the failure was regrettable and “absolutely it should not have happened.” He emphasized that existing systems were in place but broke down due to human error, and that new safeguards have been implemented to prevent recurrence.

Police Consideration of Anti-Vilification Laws

McKenna noted that police weighed potential breaches of anti-vilification laws when reviewing the protest application. However, they concluded that the group’s actions did not meet the legal threshold to deny the assembly, despite being “abhorrent and offensive.”

This case highlights the tension between freedom of assembly and community protection, a recurring theme in the royal commission’s inquiries.

Impact on the Jewish Community and Trust

The apology comes amid broader concerns about rising antisemitism in Australia. Jewish community leaders have expressed disappointment, stressing that timely warnings are crucial for safety and psychological well-being.

McKenna’s testimony underscores the need for robust communication channels between law enforcement and minority groups, especially when extremists plan public demonstrations.
