Andy Burnham faces a defining moment as he steps into Downing Street, and the ghosts of past prime ministers offer crucial lessons for his tenure. The first piece of unsolicited advice is to ignore unsolicited advice, avoiding the trap of being swayed by the last person in his ear, a flaw that plagued Boris Johnson.
Learning from Recent Predecessors
Burnham should study the experiences of Johnson, Starmer, and others who have led the UK through turbulent times. Keir Starmer's early mistake of promising things would only get worse ruined his honeymoon period, setting a tone of gloom that never lifted. Burnham arrives without a fresh general election mandate but with voter goodwill, recognizing that seven prime ministers in 10 years is unsustainable.

The Critical First Weeks
How Burnham handles his opening phase is crucial. First impressions matter, and many voters outside Greater Manchester still see him as unknown. His actions and words in the next few weeks will shape public perception, much like an overture decides the verdict on a show. He must nurture hope, staying true to his mission: “To bring back hope.”
| Prime Minister | Key Mistake | Lesson for Burnham |
|---|---|---|
| Boris Johnson | Easily swayed by last advisor | Stay decisive, avoid influence |
| Keir Starmer | Promised gloom early on | Project optimism from day one |
| Liz Truss | Rushed economic policies | Take time, build consensus |
