BBC Three and Scotland Closure Fears: 2,000 Jobs at Risk 2026

BBC Three and BBC Scotland closure fears are mounting as the corporation begins a redundancy process that could result in up to 2,000 job losses. Staff are bracing for an announcement next week from director general Matt Brittin, who is expected to outline the latest stage of a £500m savings plan.

BBC Three and BBC Scotland Closure Fears Grow

The BBC has started a redundancy process in its TV and streaming division, fuelling speculation that the poorly performing BBC Three and BBC Scotland channels could be taken online-only. Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and Channels, has called for expressions of interest in voluntary redundancy across the department. In an email, he said the plan to “mitigate the number of [enforced] redundancies” includes job-sharing, reduced hours, and relocation to other BBC bases.

Sources suggest the move is a precursor to shutting the two channels as linear broadcasters. “It is no secret that BBC Scotland and BBC Three are very expensive on a cost-per-viewer basis – a key metric being looked at – and they clearly haven’t achieved what was hoped,” said one insider. For BBC Three, it would be the second time it has been taken off linear broadcast.

What the BBC Restructuring Means for Staff

Brittin has repeatedly warned that linear TV and radio services may have to close as audiences migrate online. The redundancy drive is part of a broader effort to save £500m and shed up to 2,000 jobs. The voluntary redundancy programme is open across the TV and streaming division, which includes all of the corporation’s TV stations.

Staff are being offered options such as job-sharing, a reduction in hours, and relocation to another BBC base across the UK. However, the mood is tense, with many fearing compulsory redundancies if voluntary targets are not met.

BBC Three and BBC Scotland: A Costly Experiment

Both channels have struggled to justify their costs. BBC Three, which targets younger audiences, was originally closed as a linear channel in 2016 before returning in 2021. BBC Scotland launched in 2019 but has faced criticism for low viewership. The cost-per-viewer metric is said to be a key factor in the decision.

According to insiders, the channels have not delivered the hoped-for returns, and with the BBC under financial pressure, they are prime candidates for closure.
