The Hackney football cage demolition of the Keith Miller sports pitch, known as the "San Siro of east London," threatens a vital community hub for street football. Campaigners warn that losing this self-governed space will leave local teenagers with nowhere to play.
Why the San Siro of East London Is Under Threat
Nestled behind Broadway Market and London Fields, this cage offers a rare, booking-free zone where kids of all ages organize matches spontaneously. Photographer Tara Darby, who has documented the pitch for a year, calls it a "magic moment" when 18-year-olds invited her seven-year-old son to take penalties. The Hackney football cage demolition is part of a council plan to build urgently needed social homes. While new green and ball play spaces are promised after the two-year construction, the community fears the unique character will be lost.

Community Organizers Speak Out
"I don't know where the kids will go," says Darby. The cage's wall creates a safe, democratic stage—no booking, no judgment. Teenagers are often heavily policed elsewhere, but here they find freedom. Hackney council will relocate official training sessions, but free access will vanish. Darby leads calls for a temporary replacement during the building work.
Comparison: Current vs. Planned Spaces
| Feature | Current Keith Miller Pitch | Planned Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Full-size cage with high walls | Smaller green and ball play areas |
| Booking | No booking required | Likely scheduled sessions |
| Access | 24/7 self-governed | Limited hours, supervised? |
| Community Feel | "San Siro of east London" | Unknown, risk of losing magic |
Key Takeaways: What This Means for East London
- Loss of a democratic space: The cage offers free, unregulated play for all ages.
- Two-year gap: No replacement site during construction—kids may drift away from sport.
- Gentrification pressures: The pitch sits in one of London's most gentrified areas, highlighting tensions between development and community assets.
- Social housing vs. recreation: The council balances urgent housing needs with preserving local amenities.
