Measles cases rise across the United States, surpassing 2,371 confirmed infections by July, the highest in 30 years. This surge has put pressure on state and local health departments, emphasizing the need for early identification and rapid action to contain outbreaks.
Why Measles Cases Are Rising
The current increase is driven by clusters in Arizona, South Carolina, and Utah, but with high transmission, other states are at risk. Declining vaccination rates are a key factor, with Delaware's kindergarten MMR vaccination dropping from 98.5% in 2016 to 94.1% now. This is below the 95% threshold needed for herd immunity.

The Role of Rapid Identification
Health officials stress that rapid identification of cases is critical to preventing wider spread. In July, Delaware reported its first measles case in over a decade, and within two days, officials declared an outbreak with five cases. Quick action allowed contact tracing and isolation to limit further transmission.
Vaccination Rates and Herd Immunity
Vaccination rates have dropped due to misinformation, including the debunked link between vaccines and autism, and the trend of alternative vaccination schedules. Robert Rosenbaum, Delaware's medical director, notes that lower rates increase the risk for vulnerable populations like infants and cancer patients. Herd immunity is essential to protect those who cannot be vaccinated.
| State | Cases | Vaccination Rate (Kindergarten) |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona | High | Below 95% |
| South Carolina | Moderate | Below 95% |
| Utah | High | Below 95% |
| Delaware | 5 (outbreak) | 94.1% |
Key Takeaways
- Measles cases are at a 30-year high, with 2,371 infections.
- Vaccination rates below 95% threaten herd immunity.
- Rapid identification and action are vital to controlling outbreaks.
- Misinformation and alternative schedules contribute to lower vaccination rates.
Public Health Response
Officials are urging communities to maintain high vaccination coverage and to report suspected cases immediately. Public health departments are enhancing surveillance and response protocols to identify cases quickly.
What You Can Do
Ensure your family is up-to-date on MMR vaccines, and consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns. Early detection and vaccination are the best defenses against measles.
