A Republican congresswoman has released a campaign ad criticizing Donald Trump's immigration policies, signaling a growing rift within the GOP ahead of the midterm elections. The ad, from Florida's María Elvira Salazar, highlights concerns over the administration's enforcement tactics and their impact on Hispanic communities.
Republican Ad Criticizes Trump Immigration Policies
In a 30-second spot, Salazar directly addresses the president: "Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far." She cites statistics that in July, 50% of the 50,000 people detained had no criminal record. The ad reflects a broader unease among Republicans in competitive districts, where hardline immigration stances may alienate key voter blocs.

Political Fallout in Competitive Districts
Salazar represents a Miami-area district that is nearly three-quarters Hispanic. Trump won there by 15 percentage points in 2024, but his promise of "mass deportations" has become a liability. While the administration claims it targets undocumented immigrants with criminal records, many arrested since January 2025 have no such history. This discrepancy is fueling Democratic attacks and complicating Republican re-election efforts.
Key Takeaways for the Midterms
- Republican candidates in swing districts are distancing themselves from Trump's immigration policies.
- Hispanic voters, a crucial demographic, are increasingly wary of aggressive enforcement tactics.
- The ad underscores the political risks of mass deportation promises.
- Democrats are seizing on the issue to mobilize Latino support.
Impact on Hispanic Voters and Electoral Dynamics
Salazar's ad is a strategic move to appeal to Hispanic voters, who helped Trump win in 2024 but are now reconsidering. A recent poll shows Salazar tied with Democratic challenger Eliott Rodriguez, a former TV news anchor. The district's shifting sentiment could be a bellwether for other competitive races nationwide.
| Factor | 2024 Margin | Current Poll |
|---|---|---|
| Salazar vs. Rodriguez | Salazar +20 | Tied |
| Trump vs. Biden | Trump +15 | N/A |
The data suggests that immigration enforcement is becoming a wedge issue within the Republican Party. As midterms approach, candidates must balance base enthusiasm with broader appeal.
