The Dutch navy is leveraging robots, AI, and drones to transform its sea defenses, marking a pivotal shift in military technology. Capt Sjoerd Feenstra, head of the expertise centre for unmanned systems, leads a five-week mission off Den Helder to test uncrewed vessels like Defender 1 and Defender 2, which operate without human onboard control.
Unmanned Systems in Modern Naval Warfare
Underwater vehicles, boats, and drones are set to play a key role in future armed forces globally. The Royal Netherlands Navy aims to use uncrewed systems for more than half its work within five years, while the UK plans to spend over £5bn on similar technology. These systems keep personnel out of danger zones and enhance operational capacity.

The GeoSea Vessel and Noa Drones
Central to the mission is the GeoSea vessel, repurposed from windfarm seabed monitoring to a testing base for Noa drones (resembling giant flies), Defender vessels, and a Lobster Robotics undersea mine mapper. This "system of systems" allows seamless integration of new models as technology evolves.
| Technology | Purpose | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Defender 1 & 2 | Surveillance and reconnaissance | Uncrewed, computer-controlled |
| Noa Drones | Aerial monitoring | Insect-like design for stealth |
| Lobster Robotics | Undersea mine detection | Autonomous mapping |
Global Impact of Drone Technology
Drones have exponentially increased in use since the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, playing roles in Iranian strikes and Middle East operations. The US Navy also deployed unmanned sea vessels this year against Iran. For the Dutch navy, this is more than a trend—it's a strategic necessity to handle increased information speed and capacity demands.
Key Takeaways from the Dutch Navy's Tech Shift
- Unmanned systems reduce human risk in dangerous missions.
- Integration of AI and robotics enhances decision-making speed.
- Modular designs allow rapid technology upgrades.
- Global military budgets are shifting toward autonomous platforms.
FAQ
What are uncrewed systems in the Dutch navy?
Uncrewed systems include autonomous vessels, drones, and underwater vehicles that operate without human onboard, controlled by computer systems for surveillance, mine detection, and defense.
How does AI improve naval defense?
AI enables faster data processing, autonomous decision-making, and coordination of multiple uncrewed platforms, enhancing situational awareness and reducing response times.
Why are drones important in modern warfare?
Drones provide persistent surveillance, precision strikes, and reduced risk to human soldiers. Their use has grown significantly in conflicts like Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Dutch navy's embrace of robots, AI, and drones signals a new era in sea defenses, prioritizing safety and efficiency. As technology advances, these uncrewed systems will become central to global military strategies.
