Sagal Abdi-Wali: Labour's Local Champion in Holborn and St Pancras 2026

Sagal Abdi-Wali, Labour’s candidate in the Holborn and St Pancras byelection, is zeroing in on local issues as she faces a strong Green challenge in Keir Starmer’s former seat. The 42-year-old former leader of Camden council is campaigning on a platform of visible, committed local representation, rejecting any suggestion that she aspires to national leadership.

A Local Champion, Not a Future PM

In a campaign stop at a Primrose Hill cafe, Abdi-Wali laughed off comparisons to her predecessor. “No, no, no, no, that’s not at all, in any way, what I’m trying to do,” she said. “I’m literally trying to get through the next few weeks and trying to be the member of parliament for this constituency, and that’s all I care about.” Her message is one of ruthless discipline: she emphasizes her lifelong commitment to the area, from volunteering as a teenager to serving as a councillor.

The Stakes in Holborn and St Pancras

The byelection, triggered after Keir Starmer’s resignation, is seen as a key test for Labour. Abdi-Wali’s opponent, Zack Polanski of the Green Party, is mounting a serious challenge. Labour HQ is fully aware of the stakes, and Abdi-Wali’s campaign is focused on door-knocking and direct voter contact.

Key Campaign Themes

• Local representation: Abdi-Wali stresses her deep roots in the community and her record as a councillor.
• Visibility: She promises to be a visible and accessible MP, contrasting with a more distant political style.
• Commitment: Her campaign materials repeatedly highlight her dedication to the constituency.

Comparing the Candidates

While Abdi-Wali focuses on local issues, her opponent Zack Polanski is expected to campaign on broader environmental and social justice themes. The table below compares their key messages.

What This Means for Labour

A loss in Holborn and St Pancras would be a significant blow to Labour, especially in a seat previously held by the prime minister. Abdi-Wali’s campaign is a test of whether a hyper-local focus can overcome national trends and a strong Green challenge. Her disciplined message suggests Labour is taking nothing for granted.
