Sky is closing in on a deal to broadcast the first-ever women's British & Irish Lions tour of New Zealand, a move set to significantly boost the visibility of women's rugby. The broadcaster, which has held live rights for men's Lions fixtures since 1997, is in advanced talks to add the inaugural women's series to its portfolio.
Sky Sports Set to Broadcast All Five Women's Lions Fixtures
The women's Lions will play three Tests against the Black Ferns and two tour matches next September, with Sky expected to air all five games. This investment comes at a crucial time for women's rugby, following criticism of the BBC's decision to limit coverage of the Red Roses' recent home Tests to red button and online channels.

While the world champions were beating Australia 48-15, BBC Two was showing the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, highlighting the disparity in coverage. Sky's willingness to bid for the women's Lions rights is a timely fillip for the sport.
Sky's Rugby Union Commitment and Future Plans
Sky's investment in rugby union has dipped in recent years, with no regular internationals or club matches currently broadcast. However, the broadcaster remains committed to its longstanding association with the Lions. Talks are also underway to extend the men's Lions contract to cover the 2029 series, also in New Zealand.
This move could signal a renewed focus on rugby union for Sky, potentially leading to more coverage of the sport in the future.
