The Cairngorms wildfire continues to rage as First Minister John Swinney requests UK military aid to support over 500 firefighters. This major incident has forced evacuations and closed access roads near Nethy Bridge, highlighting the dangers wildfires pose to campers and outdoor enthusiasts.
What Caused the Cairngorms Wildfire?
The fire broke out near Glenmore on July 15, quickly spreading across 6 square kilometers of heather and small trees. Changing wind conditions intensified the blaze, pushing it toward the village of Nethy Bridge. Residents were evacuated to a respite centre at the Macdonald Aviemore hotel.

Firefighting Response and Military Assistance
John Swinney formally requested military aerial support to supplement existing resources. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is focusing on creating a firebreak while ground crews battle the flames. Smoke from the fire has drifted as far as Aberdeen, 60 miles away.
