Electric vehicle drivers are facing shocking parking fines when charging their cars away from home, as many charging points are subject to parking tariffs and store opening times. This growing issue highlights the need for better awareness and clearer signage at EV charging stations.
Why EV Charging Leads to Parking Fines
Many electric car owners assume that plugging in their vehicle at a charging station is simply refueling, not parking. However, landowners often classify EV charging as parking, especially outside store hours. Kevin Laban, for example, received a £70 parking charge notice after using a charger in an Aldi car park when the supermarket was closed, despite the Pod app directing him there.

Common Scenarios for EV Charging Fines
- Charging outside store operating hours in retail car parks
- Using chargers in private lots without clear permission
- Misleading app information about parking restrictions
- Lack of visible signage on chargers or in car parks
Comparison: EV Charging vs. Traditional Refueling
| Activity | Traditional Refueling | EV Charging |
|---|---|---|
| Time required | 5-10 minutes | 30 minutes to hours |
| Parking classification | Not considered parking | Often deemed parking |
| Fine risk | Low | High if rules violated |
| Signage clarity | Clear at pumps | Often unclear or missing |
How to Avoid EV Charging Fines
To prevent unexpected penalties, always check the car park’s terms and conditions before charging. Look for signs indicating time limits or store hours, and verify that the charger app shows accurate parking restrictions. If the landowner does not allow charging outside operating times, consider using public charging stations that are available 24/7.
Key Takeaways for EV Drivers
- Always read parking signs before plugging in
- Use apps that sync with parking restrictions
- Contact the landowner if rules are unclear
- Dispute unfair fines with evidence from the app
FAQ
Can I get fined for charging my EV in a supermarket car park?
Yes, if you charge outside store opening hours or violate posted terms, the landowner may issue a parking charge notice.
Are EV charging apps responsible for showing parking rules?
Some apps can display restrictions, but it depends on the landowner providing that data. Always verify with on-site signs.
What should I do if I receive an unfair EV charging fine?
Contact the landowner or retailer with evidence from the charging app and photos of the area to dispute the fine.
