Johnny Depp is making a high-profile return to Hollywood as Ebenezer Scrooge in a new Paramount film, but the announcement has stirred fresh controversy. The actor surprised fans at Comic-Con in San Diego, appearing in costume and delivering a slurred, Trump-joke-filled monologue. This trailer explicitly launches Depp's comeback vehicle, calling him “the master of misfits.” However, the shadow of his legal battles with Amber Heard and a UK civil court finding that he repeatedly assaulted her remains unresolved for many.
Why Johnny Depp's Scrooge Film Sparks Debate
Depp’s recent years have been professionally quiet. His 2020 film Minimata earned under $1 million, and Jeanne du Barry faced feminist protests at Cannes. Now, Paramount's new Scrooge is being marketed as his redemption arc. Critics argue this rebrands a man with troubling domestic violence findings as a beloved character. Supporters point to his acting legacy. The divide reflects broader cultural battles over cancel culture and second chances.
