Pope Leo XIV's speeches and writings have been certified as human-authored by an Australian AI detection tool, just weeks after he declared artificial intelligence the greatest threat to humanity. This certification, conducted by Proudly Human, underscores the growing importance of verifying human authorship in an era of advanced AI.
How the Certification Process Works
Proudly Human, led by Australia's former chief scientist Dr Alan Finkel, used a suite of AI detection tools to analyze the pope's collection, Maps of Hope. The process involves authors signing a declaration that AI was not used for drafting, followed by rigorous checks using multiple detection algorithms.

Key Steps in Verification
- Authors or representatives must sign up and verify their identity.
- A declaration is made that AI was not used for first drafts or sentence generation.
- A suite of four to five AI detection tools, combined with an averaging algorithm, tests the text daily for accuracy.
Comparison of AI Detection Methods
| Method | Focus | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Stylistic Analysis | Writing patterns and grammar nuances | High |
| Algorithmic Averaging | Combining results from multiple tools | Very High |
| Human Declaration | Self-reporting by authors | Moderate |
The certification of Pope Leo's speeches highlights a critical trend: as AI-generated content proliferates, tools like those from Proudly Human offer a way to preserve trust in human-authored works. Dr Finkel expressed confidence in the process, noting that the book came through as "basically purely human."
Why This Matters for Content Authenticity
With AI's rapid advancement, distinguishing between human and machine writing is essential for publishers, academics, and readers. This case sets a precedent for verifying high-profile documents, from religious texts to political speeches.
