Sacha Baron Cohen Cast in Quentin Tarantino West End Play 2026

Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly set to star in Quentin Tarantino's West End playwriting debut, The Popinjay Cavalier. The celebrated actor and comedian will take on the swashbuckling title role in what is described as a "rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise."

Tarantino's Theatrical Debut: The Popinjay Cavalier

Quentin Tarantino, known for his iconic films like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, is making his first foray into playwriting with The Popinjay Cavalier. The play is set in 1830s Europe and is billed as a "sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance." Tarantino will also direct the production, which is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The announcement of the play came in March, with a planned opening in early 2027 in a West End theatre yet to be confirmed. Tarantino, who currently lives in Tel Aviv, stated last year that he would move to England with his family to work on the play, dedicating 18 to 24 months to the project.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Stage Career

Sacha Baron Cohen is no stranger to embodying outrageous characters, from Ali G to Borat. However, he has not yet had a leading role in a West End play. This production marks a significant new chapter in his career, showcasing his versatility as a performer.

Baron Cohen will soon be seen reprising his old Staines rudeboy persona in the film Ali G: Who Iz I?. But his involvement in Tarantino's play suggests he is eager to explore new creative avenues.

What to Expect from the Production

According to producer Sonia Friedman, Tarantino is "very theatre literate" and brings a unique focus on audience experience. "The most refreshing thing about him, which not all writers and directors have, is his interest in the audience experience," Friedman told the Sunday Times. "He wants the audience to have the best freaking night out in the theatre they've had all year."

With Tarantino's flair for dialogue and Baron Cohen's comedic timing, The Popinjay Cavalier promises to be a memorable event. The play's setting in 1830s Europe and its themes of deception and disguise align perfectly with both artists' strengths.
