Star Wars Welsh Dub Debuts on S4C This Christmas 2026

Star Wars has been dubbed into Welsh for the first time, with the iconic 1977 film set to air on S4C starting Christmas Day. This historic Welsh-language broadcast brings Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia to life in Cymraeg, marking a major milestone for both the franchise and Welsh media.

Star Wars Welsh Dub: A Historic First for Cymraeg

The Welsh version, titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd (New Hope), was produced by Lucasfilm and Disney in collaboration with S4C and Creative Wales. The announcement came at the National Eisteddfod in Pembrokeshire, where excitement ran high among fans and language advocates alike.

This project aligns with the film's 50th anniversary in 2027 and is part of Lucasfilm's broader effort to produce Indigenous language dubs that promote language preservation. Producer Michael Kohn emphasized the success of similar dubs in other communities, noting their positive impact on language learning and cultural pride.

Meet the Welsh Voice Cast

The star-studded cast includes some of Wales's most beloved actors. Rhys Ifans voices Obi-Wan Kenobi, while Matthew Rhys takes on Han Solo. Aimee-Ffion Edwards lends her voice to Princess Leia, and Mark Lewis Jones—who appeared in The Last Jedi—becomes Darth Vader. Rising talent Osian Morgan plays Luke Skywalker, and Llŷr Ifans voices C-3PO.

This marks a homecoming of sorts for the Ifans brothers, who gained fame with the cult classic Twin Town. Their involvement adds a layer of authenticity and star power to the Welsh dub.

Why This Dub Matters for Welsh Language Media

Dubbing a global blockbuster into Welsh is a significant step for language revitalization. It provides native speakers and learners with high-quality entertainment in their own language, normalizing Welsh in mainstream media. The S4C broadcast will also be available on digital platforms, expanding its reach.
