The Odyssey Becomes Highest Grossing R-Rated Film of All Time 2026

The Odyssey has officially become the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine with a worldwide box office haul of $1.35 billion. Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's ancient poem has shattered expectations, proving that a mature rating doesn't limit a film's commercial appeal.

The Box Office Milestone

According to data from The Numbers, The Odyssey has earned $1.35 billion globally, edging out the previous record holder, Deadpool & Wolverine, which stands at $1.34 billion since its 2024 release. This achievement is particularly notable because an R-rating—requiring viewers under 17 to be accompanied by an adult—has traditionally been seen as a barrier to massive box office success.

How The Odyssey Compares to Other R-Rated Hits

The film's performance places it ahead of other notable R-rated blockbusters. Nolan's previous work, Oppenheimer, amassed $983 million thanks to the 'Barbenheimer' phenomenon, while Joker (2019) earned $1.1 billion. The standalone Deadpool films also performed well, with $782 million and $786 million respectively.

International Appeal Drives Success

Interestingly, The Odyssey has performed better overseas than in North America. While Deadpool & Wolverine leads domestically with $637 million, The Odyssey has accrued $516 million in the U.S. and Canada. However, its international gross of $834 million demonstrates a strong global appetite for Nolan's ambitious storytelling.

What the R-Rating Means

The Motion Picture Association assigned the R-rating for "violence and some language." In the UK, it received a 15 rating for "strong violence," and in Australia, an M rating for "mature themes, violence and coarse language." Despite these restrictions, audiences have flocked to theaters, indicating that compelling narratives can transcend rating limitations.

Ongoing Box Office Battle

The Odyssey is currently competing with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has already surpassed $2 billion worldwide, becoming the second fastest film to reach that milestone after Avengers: Endgame. This rivalry could push The Odyssey's numbers even higher as it continues its theatrical run. The background to this story is set out in Avatar vs Avengers Endgame: The Box Office Battle for Number One.
