Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has sparked diverse reactions from Guardian readers, with many praising its technical brilliance but questioning its emotional depth. As expected from the director, the film is an immense technical achievement: vast in scale, beautifully shot, and carried by an absorbing soundscape, particularly impressive on the IMAX screen.
What Guardian Readers Are Saying
One reader, Samiul Kamal-Uddin from London, described the experience as reminiscent of James Bond, noting that the film did not resonate emotionally as some of Nolan’s other works have. He felt the casting sometimes overshadowed the characters, with Matt Damon evoking his early Bourne performances and Tom Holland not fully convincing in conflicted moments. However, Samantha Morton earned high praise as always.

Another reader, Carmen from St. Louis, found the story poignant and painful, focusing on a man reckoning with the death and destruction he caused. She appreciated Nolan’s move away from fundamentalism to deliver a beautiful story of redemption and healing.
A Very American Version
In Greece, the release was anticipated for all the wrong reasons. Some conservative voices objected to a Black actor playing Helen, but one Greek reader was curious to see how Nolan adapted the epic. They noted that every Greek has spent time studying The Odyssey in school, and while they didn't remember much, they had the general picture. The film’s American lens was a point of discussion.

The technical mastery of Nolan is undisputed. The soundscape, cinematography, and scale are awe-inspiring. Yet the emotional core divides viewers. Some find the casting distracting, while others appreciate the depth of the redemption arc. The film's interpretation of mythic themes also sparks debate.
