Tom Hiddleston brings a fresh perspective to the ancient tragedy of Pompeii in the National Geographic documentary Pompeii: Out of Time, now streaming on Disney+. The actor, known for his role as Loki in the Avengers films, uses his classics background to explore the hopeless heroism of ordinary Romans during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79.
Hiddleston's Unique Approach to Archaeology
Hiddleston, who earned a double first in classics from Cambridge, slips into the role of an undergraduate detective. He translates Latin headstones and interviews experts, including the founder of the Pompeii Survivors Project. The documentary blends his celebrity charm with serious scholarship, though some moments feel staged when he "throws" data in the air like an Avengers movie.

The show uses a revisionist approach, freezing frames and rewinding to explore alternative scenarios. This technique, reminiscent of Wayne's World, helps debunk the myth that Pompeii's destruction was instantaneous. Instead, it reveals a slow, agonizing ordeal where residents displayed incredible bravery. The background to this story is set out in Pompeii Wardrobe Yields Perfume Bottle and Child's Necklace.
