Sarina Wiegman's decision to drop Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone from England's squad for October's playoff against Greece has sent shockwaves through women's football, but it could prove a World Cup masterstroke. The England manager made it clear that form, not reputation, will dictate her selections moving forward.
Why Wiegman Dropped Kelly and Toone
In her typically blunt fashion, Wiegman explained that the levels of both players had not met her expectations. "The main reason is that I think the levels weren't what I expect from them on the pitch," she said. This no-nonsense approach underscores her commitment to picking players based on current performance rather than past glories.

The Impact on England's World Cup Campaign
With just under nine months until the World Cup, Wiegman's message is clear: perform for your club or risk missing out. England will play two rounds of playoffs over the next 10 weeks, starting with Greece, as they aim to go one better than their second-place finish in 2023.
Key Takeaways from Wiegman's Decision
- Form over reputation: Wiegman prioritizes current performance.
- Warning to all players: No one is guaranteed a spot.
- Urgency: With the World Cup approaching, consistency is crucial.
