Alzheimer's research is facing unprecedented challenges as the Trump administration cancels NIH grants targeting studies on discrimination and brain health. Recent cancellations at Emory University and the University of Pittsburgh have eliminated $15 million in funding, raising concerns about political interference in science.
NIH Grant Cancellations Target Alzheimer's Research on Racism
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has canceled at least three grants focused on how discrimination affects long-term brain health. These cancellations are part of a broader effort to remove disfavored topics from the agency's $47 billion portfolio. Researchers like Ann Cohen, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, expressed shock: "This kind of clear political interference – that's not a good way to do science."

Impact on Brain Health Studies
The canceled grants were designed to measure scientifically valid concepts, including structural racism's role in Alzheimer's disease risk. Andrea Rosso, an associate professor of epidemiology at Pitt, noted, "Whoever was doing this saw the words they didn't like in our grant." The funding loss jeopardizes years of work and future discoveries.
Why DEI Matters in Alzheimer's Research
Alzheimer's disease affects an estimated 7.4 million Americans, with Black Americans twice as likely to develop it or dementia compared to white populations. Research on discrimination and structural racism is critical to understanding these disparities and developing effective interventions.
| Institution | Grant Focus | Amount | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emory University | Discrimination and brain health | $5 million | Canceled |
| University of Pittsburgh | Structural racism and dementia risk | $10 million | Canceled |
What This Means for the Future of Alzheimer's Research
The cancellations signal a dangerous trend of political interference in scientific funding. Without these studies, researchers lose critical data on how social factors influence brain health. This could delay breakthroughs in prevention and treatment, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Key Takeaways
- NIH canceled $15 million in Alzheimer's research grants targeting discrimination and brain health.
- Black Americans face twice the risk of Alzheimer's, making DEI-focused research essential.
- Political interference threatens scientific integrity and public health progress.
- Advocacy and awareness are needed to protect research funding.
FAQ
Why did the NIH cancel these Alzheimer's research grants?
The cancellations are part of the Trump administration's effort to remove topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from NIH funding, specifically targeting studies on discrimination and brain health.
How does discrimination affect Alzheimer's risk?
Research shows that structural racism and discrimination contribute to chronic stress and health disparities, increasing the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, particularly in Black communities.
What can be done to protect Alzheimer's research funding?
Public advocacy, contacting elected officials, and supporting organizations that fund independent research can help pressure the NIH to reverse these cancellations and prioritize scientific integrity.
