Europe's drought has caused the Danube River to hit record lows, triggering an energy crisis as nuclear power plants shut down. This article explores the impact of extreme weather on Europe's waterways and power supply.
Record Low Water Levels on the Danube and Rhine
Baking temperatures and drought across central and eastern Europe have driven water levels on the Danube and Rhine rivers to record lows in some areas. The extreme conditions, aggravated by the climate emergency, have left waterways from the Netherlands to the Black Sea parched, disrupting shipping, energy production, and tourism.

For the first time in their history, Hungary and Romania have had to shut down atomic reactors normally cooled by the Danube. The largest nuclear power plant in Hungary, the 44-year-old Paks facility, supplies nearly half of the country's electricity and has been cutting output since Monday.
Impact on Nuclear Power Plants
The Paks power plant's cold-water intake channel from the Danube is no longer receiving sufficient water. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the plant is operating at less than 50% capacity and is expected to be completely powered down next week. The shutdown could extend for weeks as Danube water levels are expected to remain too low to restart it.
In Romania, authorities shut down a reactor unit at the Cernavodă power plant earlier in the week for safety reasons and announced a second would be switched off soon. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said the shutdowns could last for one to two weeks and urged Romanians to reduce power consumption in the evenings.
Energy Crisis Measures
Hungarian authorities have asked citizens to reduce energy use in peak evening hours, including refraining from charging EVs and switching off air conditioners. Carmakers and battery manufacturers have been ordered to cut power and water consumption. A malfunction at Hungary's largest gas-fired power plant in Százhalombatta is worsening the grid shortage.
“An energy crisis situation could arise beginning Monday,” Magyar posted on X. “Coordinated steps and restraint will be needed to avoid more severe consequences. We are counting on everyone!” The background to this story is set out in Europe's Rivers Run Dry: Rhine and Danube Hit Record Lows.
Comparison of Danube River Levels and Power Output
| Location | Water Level (cm) | Power Plant Status |
|---|---|---|
| Paks, Hungary | Below threshold | Operating at <50% capacity, shutdown expected |
| Cernavodă, Romania | Critical low | One reactor shut down, second to follow |
| Százhalombatta, Hungary | N/A | Gas-fired plant malfunctioning |
Key Takeaways
- Record low Danube water levels are causing nuclear plant shutdowns in Hungary and Romania.
- Energy crisis measures include public appeals to reduce electricity use during peak hours.
- Climate emergency is exacerbating drought conditions, leading to compounding crises across Europe.
FAQ
FAQ
How does drought affect nuclear power plants?
Nuclear power plants require large amounts of water for cooling. When river levels drop due to drought, intake channels may not provide enough water, forcing plants to reduce output or shut down entirely.
What is the current status of the Danube River?
The Danube has hit record lows in many areas, affecting shipping and energy production. Water levels are expected to remain low for weeks, prolonging the crisis.
What can citizens do to help during the energy crisis?
Citizens are urged to reduce energy consumption during peak evening hours, such as avoiding EV charging and turning off air conditioners, to prevent grid failures.
