France and Spain Battle Wildfires as Heatwave Looms 2026

Wildfires in France and Spain are raging out of control as a fresh heatwave threatens to intensify the flames. Firefighters are racing against time to contain the blazes before temperatures soar again later this week. Spanish authorities have declared Monday and Tuesday as absolutely crucial days, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warning of difficult and complex hours ahead. The situation is equally dire in southwestern France, where the Gironde wildfire is generating its own winds and advancing erratically toward Bordeaux.

The Scale of the Crisis

Spain’s largest recorded wildfire has burned over 50,000 hectares in Ávila, west of Madrid. Combined with two other fires northwest of the capital, the total scorched land exceeds 70,000 hectares. In France, the Gironde fire has forced thousands to evacuate and is moving within 15 kilometers of Bordeaux. EU officials report that wildfires could persist until early November, making this a potentially record-breaking year for burned area.

Heatwave Complicates Firefighting Efforts

Spain’s state meteorological agency, Aemet, warns that the heatwave will last at least until Sunday, bringing high temperatures and locally gusty southerly winds that make firefighting more difficult. French forecasters predict temperatures reaching 40°C (104°F) from Tuesday. Fire service spokesperson Eric Brocardi described the situation as a “race against time” to control the flames before the heatwave hits.

Government Responses and Warnings

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska emphasized the urgency of the coming days. French President Emmanuel Macron visited Bordeaux and said, “The coming weeks will be tough and we have to hold out.” Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave is bracing for all eventualities, preparing to accommodate a large number of people if further evacuations are ordered.
