Matthew Brennan sprinted to his second Vuelta a España stage victory on stage five, showcasing his devastating speed in Roquetes. The 21-year-old British rider, making his Grand Tour debut with Visma-Lease a Bike, was expertly led out by teammates Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, sealing the win on the 173.4km route from Falset. This triumph marks Brennan's second success in as many sprint opportunities at the final Grand Tour of the season.
How Brennan Clinched the Vuelta a España Stage 5 Win
The stage began with a five-rider breakaway, including Walter Calzoni (Pinarello Q36.5), Stefan Küng (Tudor), Mattia Gaffuri (Picnic PostNL), Diego Uriarte (Equipo Kern Pharm), and Fredrik Dversnes (Uno-X Mobility), who had attacked solo. Küng soon dropped back, leaving a four-man group that was caught by the peloton with around 100km remaining. Lidl-Trek then upped the pace, shutting down the escapees on a windy day where crosswinds threatened to split the bunch.

As the race entered its final kilometers, Visma-Lease a Bike took control, with van Aert and Laporte delivering a textbook lead-out for Brennan. The young sprinter powered past Jordi Meeus (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) and Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education–EasyPost) to take his second stage win, while Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates XRG) safely maintained his commanding 3min 21sec general classification lead.
Key Moments and Performances
Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step) claimed maximum points at the intermediate sprint in Tivenys, but it was Brennan's finish that stole the show. The stage, the first entirely on Spanish roads this year, saw the peloton navigate challenging crosswinds and a fast final approach.
