Important fact that you should know about the toilet lid, you surely know someone who always leaves the toilet lid up. With any luck, he at least flushes the toilet. Maybe you are that person. Be that as it may, I'm going to give you the reason why you should lower the toilet lid. And maybe, who knows, also a good excuse to change your toothbrush.

WHAT IS THE TOILET LID FOR?
Basically to cover the toilet bowl, when you flush the toilet it produces an aerosol effect that permeates everything.
I'm not saying it, Dr. Charles Gerba, a famous microbiologist from the University of Arizona, said it back in 1975.
When you flush the toilet with the lid open, a mass of water vapor full of bacteria is formed and comes out of the toilet.
Contaminated water particles float for hours (a couple, at least) throughout the bathroom before landing: On your walls, your towels, your shower curtains, your toilet paper (which should automatically stop being called that), your soap dish and your brand new toothbrush.

WHY LOWER THE TOILET LID?
The best reason you should flush the toilet with the toilet lid down is for hygiene. Bacteria will also escape through the small gap between the lid and the earthenware, but the quantities will be much smaller and, furthermore, horizontally, without splashing in all directions, but more or less at knee height.
And what happens if you need to use the brush?
Then you lower the lid, flush the chain and, when the flush is finished, open and clean the remains. And then you put it in its socket, lower the lid again and flush the chain again.
A question of bacteria
But don't be overly alarmed: if you don't lower the toilet seat, your toothbrush will probably still not be the germiest object in your house. Dr. Gerba, who loves germs so much that he gave his first child the middle name Escherichia (from the fecal bacteria Escherichia Coli or E. Coli.), did a study on different areas of the house to determine which one contained the highest concentration of bacteria per square inch and the result was surprising.
The thing with the most bacteria in a house is the kitchen scouring pad, followed by the sink sink. And, among the 15 places he analyzed, the toilet bowl turned out to be the cleanest.
In his own words: “If an alien came from space and studied bacteria concentrations, he would surely conclude that you should wash your hands in the toilet and poop in the sink.” A horny one, Dr. Gerba.

WHAT HAPPENS TO PUBLIC TOILETS?
For example, those of the place where you study, where you work, or those of the unemployment office, it depends on your case. Well, Dr. Gerba also did a study in several offices in the United States, collecting various types of bacteria on different surfaces: the desk, the telephone, the mouse, the microwave door, the elevator button, the photocopier power button, the toilet bowl, the fax machine, the refrigerator handle and the water machine button.
The result, again, was amazing: The surface with the most germs was the phone (with 25,000 bacteria per square inch), perhaps because a lot of different ears use it every day.
Followed by the desk, with 21,000 bacteria; the keyboard, with 3,300; and the mouse, with 1,700. And the most incredible thing is that the toilet only contained 49 bacteria per square inch. 50 times cleaner than the desktop.
Surprising truth, the explanation? According to Dr Gerba, the toilet bowl, the part where we put the bottom, is a very dry environment for bacteria to proliferate.
In addition, it is a place that is cleaned more frequently than the keyboard or the desk, the ones largely forgotten by the cleaning staff (at least where I work).
So, the next time I have to stay for lunch at work, I will go to the toilet, to be in a clean and disinfected environment.
