The Rise of Irish Talent in the AFLW

Since Cora Staunton's pioneering move to the GWS Giants in 2017, Irish players have become a cornerstone of the AFLW. Their Gaelic football background brings exceptional speed, agility, and endurance, making them natural fits for Australian rules. Staunton, now back in Ireland, serves as a mentor and selector for the Ireland team, bridging the two football cultures.

Current AFLW lists feature 46 Irish players, with eight premiership winners and nine All-Australian selections. Geelong's Aishling Moloney, from County Tipperary, was the joint leading goalkicker in 2024, while Niamh McLaughlin made history as the first Irish captain in the AFL/AFLW, co-leading the Gold Coast Suns.
