The Steam Machine is Valve's bold attempt to bring the full Steam library into the living room, and it's finally here after years of speculation. This cube-shaped desktop PC runs SteamOS and aims to bridge the gap between console simplicity and PC flexibility. But its launch hasn't been smooth sailing, thanks to a global RAM shortage that has impacted pricing and availability.
What Is the Steam Machine?
At its core, the Steam Machine is not a traditional console but a compact PC powered by SteamOS, Valve's Linux-based operating system. The idea is to offer a console-like experience—plug it into your TV, grab a controller, and play—while retaining the freedom of a computer underneath. It's essentially the desktop counterpart to the Steam Deck, sharing the same philosophy of open gaming.

Valve unveiled the device in November 2025 alongside the new Steam Controller and the Steam Frame VR headset, creating a cohesive hardware ecosystem centered around SteamOS. This trio aims to solidify Valve's presence in the living room after the mixed reception of its earlier Steam Machines in 2015.
Pricing and Launch Details
The Steam Machine starts at €1,039 for the 512 GB model, a price point that reflects the current component market. Valve opened reservations until June 25, allowing users to join a waitlist. To combat scalping, the company later randomized the order of the waitlist, ensuring fairer access for genuine gamers.
However, the global RAM and component crisis has disrupted Valve's original plans for pricing and release timing. The shortage has forced the company to adjust its strategy, making the Steam Machine a more premium offering than initially anticipated.
Key Features and Ecosystem
The Steam Machine is designed to integrate seamlessly with Valve's other hardware. The new Steam Controller and Steam Frame VR headset work together to create a unified experience, all built around SteamOS. This ecosystem approach mirrors what console makers like Sony and Microsoft have done, but with Valve's signature openness.
- SteamOS: A Linux-based OS optimized for gaming, offering a console-like interface.
- Compact cube design: Fits easily into entertainment centers.
- Full Steam library: Access thousands of games, including AAA titles and indies.
- Hardware synergy: Works with Steam Controller and Steam Frame VR.
- PC flexibility: Can be used as a regular desktop computer.

Challenges and What to Watch Next
The biggest challenge for the Steam Machine is the ongoing RAM shortage, which has already affected its price and launch timeline. Valve's decision to randomize the waitlist is a direct response to scalping concerns, but it remains to see how many units will be available at launch. Another factor is consumer adoption. While the Steam Deck found a dedicated audience, the Steam Machine faces stiff competition from established consoles and the convenience of traditional PCs. Valve's success will depend on how well it communicates the value proposition of a SteamOS-based desktop. Looking ahead, keep an eye on how Valve manages production and whether the RAM crisis eases. Any changes to pricing or availability will significantly impact the device's reception. Additionally, the integration with Steam Frame VR could be a unique selling point if Valve markets it effectively.
