Minnesota primaries on Tuesday are set to redefine the political landscape for both Democrats and Republicans, with key races for governor and US Senate. Voters are weighing candidates who represent divergent paths, from progressive Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan to election denier Mike Lindell, as the state's Democratic lean faces new challenges.
Democratic Primary: Flanagan vs. Craig for US Senate
The Democratic US Senate primary pits Peggy Flanagan, a progressive and current lieutenant governor, against Angie Craig, a moderate US representative. The race has been marked by sharp differences on immigration enforcement, especially after two residents were killed by immigration agents during a winter surge.

Flanagan has secured the endorsement of outgoing Senator Tina Smith, while Craig emphasizes her legislative experience. Polls show a tight contest, with both candidates vying for the Democratic base and general election appeal.
Republican Primary: Lindell Leads Three-Way Governor Race
On the Republican side, Mike Lindell, a prominent election denier and founder of MyPillow, carries former President Trump's endorsement in a three-way race for governor. Republicans face an uphill battle against likely Democratic nominee Amy Klobuchar, but fraud scandals in state programs may give them an opening.
Key Issues and Voter Sentiment
Minnesota has not elected a Republican statewide since 2006, and a GOP presidential candidate hasn't won the state since 1972. However, recent fraud cases involving meal programs, autism services, and housing assistance have fueled Republican criticism of Democratic governance.
| Race | Democratic Candidate | Republican Candidate | Key Issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Governor | Amy Klobuchar (likely) | Mike Lindell (frontrunner) | Fraud scandals, Trump endorsement |
| US Senate | Peggy Flanagan / Angie Craig | Michele Tafoya (likely) | Immigration enforcement |
What to Watch After Tuesday
The primary results will set the stage for the general election, which could signal a shift in Minnesota's political trajectory. For Democrats, unity will be critical after a divisive primary. For Republicans, the question is whether Lindell's polarizing stance can attract moderate voters.
Key Takeaways
- Flanagan vs. Craig is a battle between progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party.
- Mike Lindell could reshape the GOP's appeal in a state that has leaned Democratic for decades.
- Fraud scandals and immigration enforcement are dominant themes influencing voter decisions.
- The general election will test whether either party can broaden its coalition.
