MLS Returns All 27 US Teams to US Open Cup in Major Reversal 2026

In a major reversal, Major League Soccer will reportedly allow all 27 of its US-based teams to participate in the US Open Cup next year, ending a three-year hiatus. This decision marks a significant shift in the league's approach to the oldest soccer competition in the United States.

Why MLS Withdrew from the US Open Cup

Starting in 2023, MLS pulled its teams from the US Open Cup, citing concerns about game presentation, professionalism, and fixture congestion. Commissioner Don Garber and other league officials argued that matches often held at smaller venues, such as high school stadiums or public parks, lacked the quality expected by fans and broadcasters. The patchwork broadcasting and inconsistent scheduling also contributed to the decision.

Impact of the Leagues Cup Expansion

The expansion of the Leagues Cup in 2023, which now involves every MLS team, created a packed calendar. This added to the league's reasoning for withdrawing from the Open Cup, as teams faced a grueling schedule with little room for additional matches.

What the Return Means for Soccer in the US

The return of MLS teams to the US Open Cup is a win for soccer purists and fans of the tournament's rich history. The competition, running continuously since 1914, provides a platform for amateur and semi-pro teams to compete against top-tier professional sides, similar to England's FA Cup.

Key Takeaways from the MLS Decision

• All 27 US-based MLS teams will compete in the 2024 US Open Cup.
• This ends a three-year period of MLS teams being absent from the tournament.
• The move is expected to boost the tournament's prestige and viewership.
• Amateur and semi-pro teams will again have the chance to face MLS opposition.
• MLS will need to manage fixture congestion carefully to avoid player burnout.

Historical Significance of the US Open Cup

The US Open Cup has been a staple of American soccer since 1914, with only two editions skipped due to the Covid-19 pandemic. MLS teams have dominated the competition, winning all but one edition since the league's inception in 1996. The return of these teams ensures the tournament retains its competitive edge and historical importance.

Fan and Player Reactions

Fans have largely welcomed the news, as the Open Cup offers a unique charm with its David-vs-Goliath matchups. Players, too, often cherish the opportunity to compete in a cup with deep roots. The decision aligns with growing interest in soccer across the US, especially with major tournaments like the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.

Challenges Ahead for MLS

While the return is positive, MLS faces challenges in balancing schedules. The Leagues Cup, MLS regular season, and playoffs already demand significant player minutes. The league will need to coordinate with US Soccer to ensure the Open Cup fits seamlessly into the calendar, potentially by adjusting dates or allowing roster flexibility.

What This Means for Smaller Clubs

For amateur and semi-pro teams, the return of MLS teams is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it brings attention and revenue through potential upsets. On the other, it makes the path to the final much harder. Still, the opportunity to host an MLS team at a local stadium is a dream for many players and communities.

Conclusion

The reported return of all 27 US-based MLS teams to the US Open Cup is a landmark decision that underscores the league's commitment to tradition and growth. As the tournament prepares for its next edition, fans can look forward to exciting matchups and the chance to see top-tier soccer in unexpected venues. This move not only restores a beloved competition but also strengthens the fabric of American soccer.
