The UK’s suppressed climate national security report reveals stark warnings from spy chiefs about catastrophic risks to the UK from global ecosystem collapse. This report, commissioned under the previous Conservative government, was withheld from publication for nearly a year under Keir Starmer’s administration, raising significant concerns about transparency and preparedness.
What Is the Suppressed Climate Security Report?
In an unprecedented move, UK intelligence agencies assessed the national security implications of climate change and biodiversity loss. The report outlines scenarios where food shortages, mass migration, conflicts, and even nuclear war could arise from environmental collapse. The Guardian has seen portions of the report, which warns that severe impacts on UK food supply could occur as early as 2030.

Why Was the Report Suppressed?
The report was originally commissioned by the Conservative government but was not published after Keir Starmer took office. Critics argue that suppressing such critical information undermines public trust and delays necessary action. The government is now briefing foreign ministers on the findings, seeking global support for concerted efforts to mitigate these risks.
Key Findings and Implications
The report highlights that the collapse of vital ecosystems—driven by climate change and overexploitation of nature—poses direct threats to UK national security. These include:
- Food shortages as early as 2030 due to disrupted agriculture and supply chains.
- Mass migration from regions rendered uninhabitable by climate impacts.
- Conflicts over scarce resources like water and arable land.
- Nuclear war risk stemming from heightened geopolitical tensions.
- Societal breakdown as governments struggle to manage cascading crises.
Comparing Climate Security Risks
The table below summarizes the projected impacts and timelines based on the report’s scenarios.
| Risk | Projected Timeline | Impact on UK |
|---|---|---|
| Food shortages | As early as 2030 | Increased reliance on imports, price spikes, social unrest |
| Mass migration | 2030–2050 | Pressure on infrastructure, political instability |
| Resource conflicts | 2030–2040 | Military involvement, diplomatic crises |
| Nuclear escalation | 2040–2050 | Existential threat to national security |
Global Ramifications and the Need for Action
The UK government’s decision to brief foreign ministers indicates a recognition that these threats transcend borders. International cooperation is essential to address the root causes and build resilience. The suppressed report serves as a wake-up call for policymakers worldwide to prioritize climate security.
