We all dream of having a Legend of Zelda desk in our bedroom, that is why inspired by the franchise and mixing with a small flare of steampunk, this desk was built as a birthday gift for our youngest son who loves Zelda in which we will teach you step by step how to do it yourself.
It is mainly constructed of MDF for easy painting. If you like these types of tables, you can learn how to make a very original table with coins.
Tools and materials:
- (3) 4' X 8' sheets of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
- (1) wooden dowel 1/2" diameter and 36" long
- 1/4" 48" x 48" Polycarbonate Sheet
- Assorted screws
- Wood glue
- Finishing materials (I chose metallic paint)
How to build your own Legend of Zelda desk:

- Although I use Fusion 360 for my 3D printing designs, I was not using fusion when I designed this.
- I used two pieces of software for this design, Google Sketchup and Vectric Aspire.
- I made a 3d mockup of the desk in Sketchup to first work out the proportions and then converted the parts to a DXF file format that Aspire could work with.
- I used Aspire to program the paths to follow for the CNC.
Step 2: Cut the pieces

- I cut the parts using my home-built CNC that I made several years ago before home-use CNCs were a thing, it has a fairly small cutting area at 26″ x 34″, but I was able to cut the larger parts by creating an index point by which I cut the first half of the part, stopped the machine, moved the part and aligned the index point with the cutter and finished cutting the rest of the part.
Step 3: A little complicated

- At first I tried to make the gears myself, but I was having trouble getting the teeth to mesh. I mean it looked like it could really move, right?
- I ended up finding free gear generation software that created DXF files for cutting.

Step 4: Glue and more glue

- If you've ever worked with MDF, you know that it absorbs glue like a sponge!
- The trick to a good solid glue is to apply a light coat of glue and let it partially dry before applying the coat that will hold the parts together.
Step 5: Dry Fit

- As a final step before painting, you should dry-join all parts to ensure nothing needs to be adjusted or sanded.
Step 6: Painting

- Painting MDF is fairly simple, but to help prevent the board from soaking through its paint you should first apply a 'filler primer', filler primers are heavy bodied to fill in imperfections and as a result do not penetrate the MDF as easily as thinner. primers so fewer topcoats are needed to obtain a good finish.
I chose Aged Metallic for the finish to give the desk a worn look
Step 7: Completion

The last thing needed to finish the desk is to cut the polycarbonate and place it on top as a writing surface. Greetings!
